Ho to Read Nancy

How to Read Nancy (Fantagraphics) illuminates the art of comics by analyzing the Ernie Bushmiller classic. Written by The Center for Cartoon Studies longtime summer faculty member Paul Karasik along with co-author Mark Newgarden, it won 2018 Eisner Award Winner: Best Comics-Related Book. Nancy is a beloved comic strip, and Bushmiller was known for his deep understanding of the comics format. Karasik and Newgarden use Nancy to explore how to make a comic and offer insight not only into Nancy but into the entire discipline of comics.

Nancy has been in many hands over the years. After Bushmiller died, Al Plastino did the Sunday strips from 1982 to ’83.  Mark Lasky handled the daily comic in 1983, but he died at 29 from cancer. Jerry Scott drew the strip from 1984 to ’94, when he was replaced by Guy and Brad Gilchrist. And in the beginning of 2018, the reins were handed over to Olivia Jaimes, who has worked to update the strip while also maintaining the classic feel of the strip.

Paul Karasik (The Ride Together with Judy Karasik) teaches the Graphic Novel Workshop every summer to sold out sessions at CCS. The week-long workshop helps to revise and hone your graphic novel in progress. The Center for Cartoon Studies summer 2019 workshop line up will be released in early January 2019!
