FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
White River Junction, Vermont –The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) has selected Arwen Donahue as its sixth annual Cornish-CCS Residency Fellowship for Fall 2023. Arwen will be working on a graphic memoir that explores generational legacies of sexual violence and asks how writing and art can play a role in their transformation.
“According to Arwen, “My mom carried the burden of a secret that her own mother forbade her to talk about. A cycle of violence and silence goes generations back, and my mother bore the brunt of it. Still, she was a dedicated healer and a hilarious lady with a brilliant intellect. This work is my effort to give voice to her.” “
Arwen Donahue is the author of the graphic memoir Landings: A Crooked Creek Farm Year (Hub City) and the oral history collection This Is Home Now: Kentucky’s Holocaust Survivors Speak (University Press of Kentucky). Her comics, essays and graphic stories have been featured in The Field Guide to Graphic Literature, Electric Literature, LitHub, The Nib, The Rumpus, and elsewhere. She has received grants and awards from the Sustainable Arts Foundation, the Xeric Foundation, the Kentucky Foundation for Women, the Kentucky Humanities Council, and an Al Smith Fellowship from the Kentucky Arts Council. Arwen lives on a farm in Kentucky, where her family has raised produce for local markets for over 20 years.
This month-long fellowship provides a $3000 stipend and housing and studio space on 12 secluded acres in Cornish, New Hampshire as well as full access to all The Center for Cartoon Studies resources including The Schulz Library, production lab, and a downtown White River Junction, Vermont studio space. The fellow was selected from a pool of 48 applicants.
