Cartoonist Dispatches: Roz Chast and Chuck Forsman ’08

The New Yorker Cartoonist Roz Chast has published several cartoon collections and has written and illustrated several children’s books. Her graphic memoir chronicling her parents’ final years, Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?, won the National Book Critics Circle Award and the inaugural Kirkus Prize, and was short-listed for a National Book Award in 2014. Her most recent book, Going into Town, an illustrated guide to New York City, won the New York City Book Award in 2017. The editor of The New Yorker, David Remnick, has called her “the magazine’s only certifiable genius.”

Chuck Forsman ’08 is best known for his graphic novels The End of the Fxxxing World (TEOTFW) and I Am Not Okay With This (IANOWT), which were both adapted into Netflix shows to wide acclaim. Chuck is a graduate of The Center for Cartoon Studies class of 2008. “Forsman is one of the strongest and most vital young cartoonists currently putting pen to paper — not to mention one of the most fully, uniquely realized.” — The A.V. Chuck Forsman ′08 Gets Second TV Show

I Am Not Okay With This by Charles Forsman ′08

Chuck Forsman ′08 is still making comics despite finding fame with his stories through TV series. His comic The End of the F***ing World was adapted by Jonathan Entwistle for British television and has since been nominated for numerous awards and was a winner of the the British Screenwriters’ Award. Now Entwistle is adapting Chuck’s mini comic I Am Not Okay with This for Netflix.

Alum Spotlight: Chuck Forsman

Chuck Forsman ’08 is the force behind Oily Comics. He has a new comic, Automa, that he is serializing on Patreon. His comic The End of the XXXXing World (now out through Fantagraphics) has been adapted as a Netflix Original Series. Season 1 was nominated for the 2018 British Academy Television Award for Best Drama Series.

Alum Chuck Forsman: Guest at Lucca Comics and Games Festival in Italy

International traveler Chuck Forsman ′08 will be a guest at Lucca Comics & Games. The show is in Italy from October 31 to November 4. Chuck will be there with the Italian edition of The End of the ****ing World, on which the TV show of the same name is based. It is a big show with other cartoonists such as Faith Erin Hicks (The Nameless City trilogy, First Second), Skottie Young (I Hate Fairyland, Image Comics), and Dave McKean (Arkham Asylum, DC).

001 Edizioni is the Italian publisher of The End of the ****ing World. They have published translations of such cartoonists as Peter Kuper (Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle) and Eddie Campbell (Alec), so Chuck is in good company.

TEOTFW Renewed for Season 2

The End of the F***ing World

On the heels of the British Academy Film Award nomination for Best Drama Series, The End of the XXXing World, based on the comic by Chuck Forsman ′08, has been renewed for a second season on Netflix. Chuck is excited to see where the show continues.

If you have a hard time waiting, Neelah Debanth talks about Chuck’s response on Express before the announcement was made. After the announcement was official on August 22, Dusty Baxter-Wright wrote about the excitement of the director and actors on Cosmopolitan.

CCS Alum at the Harvey Awards

The Harvey Awards are coming up and The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) alum Tillie Walden ′16 and Chuck Forsman ′08 both make appearances. The nominees were selected by comics professionals, and winners will be voted on by all industry professionals.

Tillie’s Spinning (First Second) is up for not only Best Children’s or Young Adult Book but also for Book of the Year. Spinning already won an Eisner for Best Reailty-Based Work. And The End of the XXXXing World TV series, adapted as a Netflix Original Series from Chuck’s comic of the same name (now out from Fantagraphics), is up for Best Adaptation from a Comic Book/Graphic Novel.

Faber and Faber to release UK edition of The End of the F***ing World graphic novel by The Center for Cartoon Studies alum Charles Forsman, in March 2018.  #TEOTFW is a Netflix Original Series based on the comic by Charles, was published in the US by Fantagraphics Books.

“The End of the ***ing World” heading to Netflix!

A NETFLIX ORIGINAL:  The End of the ***ing World to release January 5th!

In 2013, Charles Forsman (’08) completed The End of the ***ing World, a look into the bleak lives of teenagers James and Alyssa. In 2013, then–film student Jonathan Entwistle create a short film of the comic. In 2014, he directed a pilot episode for a TV show. And now the show is coming to Netflix! Channel 4 launched the series in the UK on October 24.

Next Up Visiting Artists: Melissa Mendes and Charles Forsman

Melissa Mendes  lives and works in Hancock, Massachusetts. She attended Hampshire College for her undergraduate studies, and at The Center for Cartoon Studies she got her MFA. In 2010 she received a Xeric Grant to publish her first graphic novel, Freddy Stories. She has drawn comics with the Ladydrawers for Trughout.org,  Bitch Media, and illustrated a chapter book called Jack Strong Takes a Stand (Roaring Brook Press). Her comic, Lou, was published in 17 issues by Oily Comics. She is drawing a series for Belt Magazine titled Harvey and Me, written by Ann Elizabeth Moore, about her adventures with Harvey Pekar. Melissa is currently serializing her graphic novel, The Weight.

Charles Forsman is a 2008 graduate of The Center for Cartoon Studies. Forman is a three-time Ignatz Award-winner for his self-published mini comic, Snake Oil and his graphic novel The End of The Fucking World (Fantagraphics). Fantagraphics also published his graphic novel Celebrated Summer in 2014. Forsman lives in Hancock, Massachusetts where he runs Oily Comics and works on his monthly action comic book, Revenger.
