“You Are New” by Lucy Knisley ′09 a New York Times Best Children’s Book of 2019

The New York Times has released its top 25 children’s books of 2019, and You Are New (Chronicle Books) by Lucy Knisley ′09 has been selected. The list includes other great cartoonists such as Dylan Meconis for Queen of the Sea (Walker Books), Sara Varon for Hold Hands (First Second), Raina Telgemeier for Guts (Scholastic), and Ryan Andrews for This Was Our Pact (First Second).

State of the Union: Comics

The Center for Cartoon Studies instructor Jason Lutes (Berlin) was part of a panel discussing the state of comics at the American Library Association (ALA) conference in June. Along with Jaime Hernandez (Love and Rockets) and Raina Telgemeier (The Baby-Sitters Club), the panel was moderated by Amie Wright. They discussed their relationships to their characters, the rise of graphic memoir and biography, using comics to promote literacy, and shelving graphic novels separately or with the rest of the collection. Though there was disagreement among the panel, Jason sees shelving graphic novels in the general collection as a step in the right direction.

Graduate Spotlight: Jarad Greene ′17

Jarad Greene ’17 just sold his first graphic novel, Scullion! So a big congratulations on your graphic novel debut, Jarad. He is the administrative and development coordinator at The Center for Cartoon Studies. In 2017, he was selected to represent CCS on the judging panel for the Cartoonist Studio Prize, which selected Eleanor Davis for Libby’s Dad (Retrofit and Big Planet Comics) and Christina Tran for “On Beauty.” His mini-comic Memories of a Former Porcelain Doll won a 2017 MICE mini-grant. He recently did the following interview with Angela Boyle ′16.

From Making Scents

Shelli Paroline escaped early on into the world of cartoons and science fiction, and from there launched into creating comics. She and her husband Braden Lamb form an Eisner Award-winning art team, collaborating on such series as the Adventure Time comics. they have also illustrated The Midas Flesh (Boom! Box) and Making Scents (First Second).

CCS Book Proposal Contest Winner Is Josh Rosen!

The winning project for the The Center for Cartoon Studies Book Proposal Contest goes to alum Josh Rosen! The contest was open to alum of The Center for Cartoon Studies. Josh’s graphic novel proposal, The Secret Adventures of Felix Pinn, will be represented to trade book publishers by Judith Hansen, a literary agent who represents such cartoonists as Scott McCloud, R. Crumb, Raina Telgemeier, Gene Luen Yang, Kazu Kibuishi, Ben Hatke, Vera Brosgol and Bryan Lee O’Malley. Josh is also awarded $1000! The winner was selected by Barnes & Noble’s Jim Killen and Judith Hansen. Congratulations Josh!

Babysitter’s Club cartoonist Raina Telgemeier visits CCS this month!

One of the many wonders of The Center for Cartoon Studies Schulz Library is having several of Raina’s self-published mini-comics in the zine collection. Raina’s most recent book, Smile, is about her battle within her own mouth.
