2024 Thesis Exhibition

Congratulations to the Class of 2024! An exhibit featuring work by the graduating class is on display at the CCS Gallery. The gallery is located at 94 South Main Street, in downtown White River Junction, in the Colodny building. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 12 noon to 4 pm. The Thesis Exhibition will be on display and open to the public from May 8th to May 31st.

The Commencement Speaker for the class of 2024 is Ngozi Ukazu. Ngozi is a New York Times-bestselling cartoonist, a DC Comics artist, and the creator of the award-winning graphic novel Check, Please!, BUNT, and has a forthcoming graphic novel FLIP. Check, Please! began as a popular webcomic, noted as the highest funded project in Kickstarters history. The series won numerous awards including the Reuben and the William Morris Award. Check Please has also been translated into multiple languages. Since 2020 her cartoons have also appeared in The New Yorker. She graduated from Yale University with a degree in Computing and The Arts, and later received a master’s in sequential arts and comics.  Commencement will be held on Monday, May 6th, at 12 noon at Northern Stage’s The Barrette Center for the Arts in White River Junction.

This Year’s Commencement Speaker: Nate Powell

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VERMONT: On Friday, May 6, The Center for Cartoon Studies will hold its 10th commencement ceremony. This year’s speaker is New York Times best-selling cartoonist Nate Powell, whose work includes March, a graphic novel autobiography of Congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis; a graphic adaptation of Rick Riordan’s novel The Lost Hero; and graphic novels You Don’t Say, Any Empire, Swallow Me Whole, The Silence Of Our Friends, and The Year of the Beasts.

Powell’s work has received a Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, a Coretta Scott King Author Honor Award, four YALSA Great Graphic Novels for Teens selections, a Best American Comics selection, and has been nominated for a total of eight Eisner Awards and a Los Angeles Times Book Prize.

Denis St. John Offers Cartooning Workshops for Vermont’s Big Read


Denis St. John (CCS ′08) has brought his cartooning workshops to high school classrooms all over Vermont as part of the national Big Read program.  CCS has partnered with Northern Stage to offer Big Read programming that focuses on book The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien.  In his lesson, Denis compare O’Brien’s collection of Vietnam War stories to the comics of Bernie Krigstien, Art Spiegelman and Will Eisner.
