Announcing the fourth year of The Cornish CCS Fellowship Residency

White River Junction, Vermont – The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) announces the fourth year of The Cornish CCS Fellowship Residency. The month-long residency is held during the height of New England’s fall foliage season and will include a $3000 stipend. The deadline to apply is August 15, 2019.

Located in Cornish, NH, The Cornish CCS Residency is designed to create a focused and inspiring environment for cartoonists to create exceptional work. Cornish is located 16 miles from The Center for Cartoon Studies (VT), in beautiful rural New Hampshire.

This residency is made possible by former CCS board member, cartoonist Harry Bliss, whose work regularly appears in The New Yorker. “I want to attract the best cartoonists working today and create a residency that is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for storytellers who are pushing the boundaries of the medium,” Bliss said.

Ali Fitzgerald Wins Gold at IP Awards

Ali Fitzgerald’s, the 2017 Cornish Fellow, Drawn to Berlin: Comic Workshops in Refugee Shelters and Other Stories from a New Europe (Fantagraphics) has won the gold medal at the IP Awards for Graphic Novel / Drawn Books. Ali works with the record-breaking number of people who are seeking asylum in Berlin, fleeing from countries such as Syria and Afghanistan. Her compassionate and unflinching comics capture the range of depression and hope found in this group.

Independent Publisher is a monthly digital publication for independent publishers, booksellers, and authors. They host IP Awards, which include 8 Outstanding Books of the Year, 85 general categories, 24 regional categories, and 11 e-book categories and receives over 5,000 entries.

In 2015, Ali Fitzgerald began a series of comic workshops with refugees that were then supported by Comic Invasion and Amnesty International. Her first graphic novel, based on these workshops as well as Berlin’s historical/contemporary relationship to immigration and bohemia, will be published by Fantagraphics in spring 2018. At the Cornish CCS Residency Fellowship, she’ll work on a series of comics investigating the aesthetics of nationalism and propaganda. Ali lives in Berlin, Germany, and mostly works in the milieu of socially critical visual narratives. She currently contributes comics and visual essays to New York Magazine’s The Cut and The New Yorker.
