The Center for Cartoon Studies,  The Leslie Center for Humanities at Dartmouth,, and the Will and Ann Eisner Family Foundation present Jillian Tamaki in conversation with Glynnis Fawkes.

Attention Upper Valley Community! Award-winning artist and creator, Jillian Tamaki is our featured speaker for the annual Spring Eisner Lecture! In addition, our award-winning cartoonist and faculty member, Glynnis Fawkes will be moderating! We are very excited, and we hope to see on Thursday, April 20, at 5 PM for the free lecture at Dartmouth College’s Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences, Room 001. Jillian Tamaki is an award-winning cartoonist and illustrator. A professional artist since 2003 when she graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design, Tamaki has worked for publications around the world, and has even storyboarded for the popular animation show, Adventure Time. Tamaki has also taught extensively at the undergraduate and graduate level, including at the School of Visual Arts and Parsons School of Design in New York.

She is the co-creator, with her cousin Mariko Tamaki, of young adult graphic novels SKIM and THIS ONE SUMMER, the latter of which won a Caldecott Honor in 2015. She is also the author of the graphic novels SUPERMUTANT MAGIC ACADEMY, which are a collection of her serialized webcomic, and BOUNDLESS, a collection of short comic stories for adults. Her first picture book, THEY SAY BLUE, which uses color to explore the world through a child’s eyes, was released in 2018. Tamaki’s latest book and collaboration with her cousin Mariko, ROAMING, is set to be published by Drawn & Quarterly in the fall of 2023.

Glynnis Fawkes is an award-winning cartoonist and illustrator and a member of the CCS faculty. She began working as an illustrator on archaeological excavations in 1998, traveling to sites in Greece, Crete, Turkey, Israel, Cyprus, Syria, and Lebanon. After a Fulbright Fellowship to Cyprus, she published two books in 2001: one of paintings – ARCHAEOLOGY LIVES IN CYPRUS, and another of cartoons – CARTOONS OF CYPRUS. Many of her comics reflect her career in archaeology and her family life, and have been published in The New Yorker, been nominated for an Ignatz award, The Cartoonist Studio Prize, and won the Society of Illustrators MoCCA Award for Excellence in 2016 and 2017.

Fawkes has also published several graphic novels, including CHARLOTTE BRONTË BEFORE JANE EYRE in 2019, as part of the Center for Cartoon Studies Presents series, as well as a collection of her autobiographical comics, PERSEPHONE’S GARDEN, that same year. In addition to REIGN OF CRUMBS and GREEK DIARY, both in 2017. She is currently working on a graphic adaptation of Eric Cline’s 1177 BC: THE YEAR CIVILIZATION COLLAPSED for Princeton University Press, to be published in 2024.
