Every summer, The Center for Cartoon Studies holds a series of week-long workshops. This summer, they have added some new workshops, including the Young Adult Graphic Novel with Jo Knowles and alumn Tillie Walden, July 31-August 4. The week will focus on the specific idiosyncrasies inherent in young adult fiction through lectures and exercises. You will have access to not only the knowledge of these two quality creators but also the printing lab and the Schulz Library.
Jo started writing YA novels with her graduate thesis and sold her first novel, Lessons from a Dead Girl, to Candlewick Press. Currently, she teaches the MFA program at Southern New Hampshire University. Her most recent novel, Still a Work in Progress, was a Junior Library Guild selection, an American Booksellers Association ABC Best Book for Young Readers of 2016, a Washington Post Best Book of the Month, YASLA (Young Adult Library Services Association) 2017 Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers, and Children’s Book Review Best New Kids Book for August 2016.
Tillie, who graduated from CCS just back in 2016, has published 3 graphic novels. She recently won an Ignatz award for Outstanding Breakout Artist for The End of Summer and was nominated for a 2016 Eisner for Promising New Talent. Her second comic with Avery Hill Press, I Love This Part, was also nominated for an Eisner Award, Best Short Story. Her next graphic novel, Spinning, is a memoir of her childhood and teen years as a competitive figure skater and will be released in September 2017 by First Second. Her webcomic On a Sunbeam, a twenty-chapter sci-fi story was nominated for a 2017 Eisner Award.
