In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, Sasha Velour ′13 is releasing her history comic, Three Dollar Riot. Starting as her thesis right here at The Center for Cartoon Studies, the 36-page comic follows the events of the evening of June 27th, 1969, leading up to the riots. Three Dollar Riot is available for preorder for the price of 19.69.
The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay community against a police raid that began early the following morning at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. The comic is inspired by numerous first-person accounts and real-life legendary figures, including Sylvia Rivera, Tammy Novak, Stormé Delarverie, Ivan Valentin, and Marsha P. Johnson. Sasha did all the artwork, coloring, and lettering herself. And the updated version includes historical citations, recommended further readings, and a hand-drawn introduction, also by Sasha.
Sasha’s first one-queen show Smoke and Mirrors is debuting in the UK this August 9 and 10 at Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London. Buy tickets now! This world-trotting show has already been to the US, Australia, and New Zealand.
Sasha’s show Nightgowns, a theatrical drag showcase, is back for three nights, June 27 to 29, at the Abrons Arts Center in New York to celebrate World Pride. Buy tickets now!
