The 9th annual Comics and Medicine conference will be exhibiting Ill-Conceived and Well-Drawn, curated by Ellen Forney. The conference runs August 16-18th. The exhibit will be on display at The Center for Cartoon Studies prior to the conference and at Dartmouth College Baker-Berry Library during the Comics and Medicine conference from August 8th-24th.
Ellen will be presenting her newest book, Rock Steady (Fantagraphics, 2018), at the conference on Friday August 17. She will discuss “brilliant advice from my bipolar life,” as the subtitle of her book says. Rock Steady is the companion piece to her 2012 memoir, Marbles. It offers self-help tips and tricks from someone who has been through it all and come out stronger.
While at the conference, you will be able to attend many great presentations, including:
- Whit Taylor,the first keynote speaker on Friday of the conference, is also presenting “Graphic Medicine Meeting the Moment: Working Toward Social Justice.” Taylor is the co-editor of Comics for Choice (Alternative Comics, 2018), an anthology of comics about abortion.
- Kriota Willberg is presenting “Graphic Medicine for Graphic Artists: An Approach to Developing Salf Care Comics for Creative Communities” and “Technique, Aesthetics, Criticism, and Finding Common Ground.” Kriota recently released her first graphic novel, Draw Stronger (Uncivilized Books, 2018).
- Jennifer Hayden will discuss her book The Story of My Tits (Top Shelf Productions, 2015) about her experience dealing with breast cancer, her lifetime dealing with having tits, and then life after they were gone.
- Susan Squier is the final keynote speaker on She is the author of Epigenetic Landscapes: Drawing as Metaphor (Duke University Press, 2017) where she follows the cultural trail of epigenetics.
- David Macaulay is the final keynote speaker on Saturday. Macaulay is an award-winning author and illustrator, most recently releasing The Way Things Work Now (HMH Books for Young Readers, 2016), an update of his previous bestseller, The New Way Things Work.
