The Lambda Literary award finalists have been announced and two CCS books are up for the graphic novel prize: Spinning by Tillie Walden ′16 and Fetch: How a Bad Dog Brought Me Home by Nicole Georges (′13/14 CCS fellow). Lambda Literary is the United State’s oldest and largest literary arts organization devoted to advancing LGBTQ literature. And this is their 30th annual award! Both Tillie’s and Nicole’s books are autobiography that include the discovery and self-acceptance of their sexuality. The award June 4, 2018, in New York.
Spinning is about Tillie’s journey through the twisted, insular world of competitive figure skating in high school. In the rink that were the backdrop for her childhood and teen years, she battles bullies, skaters, and coaches while trying to cope with her sexuality, her identity, the world around her.
Fetch is about Nicole and Beija, a dysfunctional shar-pei/corgi mix. Both are a troublesome combination of tiny and attack, but help to comfort each other through it all: depression, relationships gone awry, and an unmoored young adulthood. Nicole chronicles their symbiotic, codependent relationship, looking at what it means to care and be responsible for another living thing.
