Event date: September 14, 2019 – September 15, 2019
In just a few weeks, Small Press Expo will be opening its doors for another year in Bethesda, Maryland. One of the largest small press comic shows in North America, it is also host to one the Ignatz Awards. Though the shortlists are juried, the final votes come from attendees at SPX. We wish the best of luck to Lucy Knisley ′09, Julie Delporte (Fellow), Eleri Harris ′14, and Alec Longstreth (Instructor)! Also, this year’s SPX illustration is by Tillie Walden ′16! SPX takes place on September 14-15.
Lucy Knisley ′09 is up for Outstanding Artist on Kid Gloves (First Second). This memoir explores Lucy’s troubles with getting and staying pregnant. Kid Gloves is also up for Book of the Year at the Harvey Awards.
Julie Delporte (CCS fellow) is up for Outstanding Collection on This Woman’s Work (Drawn and Quarterly). This autobiographical work explores the questions of femininity, gender, and creativity.
The Nib Magazine is up for Outstanding Anthology on the first two issues, “Death” and “Family.” Eleri Harris ′14 is deputy editor at The Nib. “Death” includes comics by Eleri, Rachel Dukes ′13, Sophie Yanow ′16, Andy Warner ′12, and John Carvajal ′15. “Family” includes comics by Eleri, Andy Warner, Nicole Georges (CCS fellow), and Luke Healy ′14.
Alec Longstreth (CCS instructor) is up for Outstanding Online Comic on Isle of Elsi, his webcomic for kids (and word-lovers in general). Alec recently had a successful Kickstarter for the first volume of Isle of Elsie. The books will be available to order from Alec as soon as the Kickstarter books are all shipped.
