Nominees for the 2019 Harvey Awards have been announced and there are a lot of great books from CCS grads on the list. Anyone working in the comics industry can vote until September 10 (though you must apply first). The winners will be announced at New York Comic-Con on October 4.
Berlin (Drawn and Quarterly) by CCS faculty Jason Lutes is up for Book of the Year. Collecting 20 years of work, originally printed as three volumes, Berlin is a historical epic following the people of the Weimar Republic.
Kid Gloves (First Second) by Lucy Knisley ′09 is also up for Book of the Year. Lucy documents her troubles getting and staying pregnant, exploring the sorrows and joys.
On a Sunbeam (First Second (US); Avery Hill Publishing (UK))by Tillie Walden ′16 is also up for Book of the Year, as well as for Best Children’s or Young Adult Book. Originally published as a webcomic, On a Sunbeam is a young adult sci-fi with interwoven timelines following a rag-tag crew as they repair rundown buildings and a pair of schoolgirls who fall in love and learn of loss.
The Contradictions by Sophie Yanow ′16 is up for Digital Book of the Year. Sophie’s fictional autobiography follows her year abroad in France.
The Nib, edited by Matt Bors and Eleri Harris ′14, is up for Digital Book of the Year. The Nib is an online journal of comics, including personal takes on the news of the day and informational pieces.
