The nominees have been announced for the 2020 Harvey Awards and a hearty congratulations goes out to Tillie Walden ’16, Charles Foresman ’08, and Eleri Harris ’14. All professionals from across the comic book industry are invited to vote; you just need to put in an application.
I Am Not Okay With This by Netlfix, based on I Am Not Okay With This by Charles Forsman (Fantagraphics), is nominated for Best Adaptation. This story tackles familial strain, sexual confusion, and PTSD in Forsman’s signature straight-faced-but-humorous style and is Netflix’s second adaptation of Forsman’s work, following last year’s The End of the F***ing World. Both TV series are led by Jonathan Entwistle and Christy Hall.
Are You Listening? by Tillie Walden (First Second) is up for Book of the Year. It also won an Eisner earlier this year, this magical realism story is about two women on a road trip through Texas. Bea is on the run and joins Lou in this intimate and emotionally soaring story about friendship, grief, and healing.
Grass by Keum Suk Gendry-Kim (Drawn and Quarterly) is nominated for Best International Book. This book was the recent The Center for Cartoon Studies and SLATE Cartoonist Studio Prize winner and is a moving nonfiction story about life as a “comfort woman” in Japanese-occupied Korea during World War II.
The Nib, where Eleri Harris is Features Editor, is nominated for Best Digital Book. Founded in 2013, The Nib is a daily publication devoted to publishing and promoting political and non-fiction comics.
The Harvey Awards, named for creator Harvey Kurtzman, creator of MAD magazine, are one of the comic industry’s oldest and most prestigious awards. This year the awards will be presented at a digital event, livestreamed as part of ReedPop’s New York Comic Con Metaverse, the virtual replacement for the annual New York Comic Con. New York Comic Con Metaverse is scheduled to run Oct. 8 through 11, although no specific date for the livestream has been announced.
