Kori Michele Handwerker ’19 to debut Tiny Book Science at SPX

July 21, 2024

TINY BOOK SCIENCE by faculty and alum Kori Michele Handwerker ’19 will debut at this year’s Small Press Expo (SPX) in Bethesda, MD, the premier event for graphic novels, comics and cartooning. The self-published zine workbook was inspired by Kori’s years of making and teaching about zines. Kori’s passion for zines can be seen throughout the 60-page educational publication, which they designed and drew entirely. TINY BOOK SCIENCE features a library of handouts and lessons for zine-makers and other educators to teach about zines and how to make them. A digital copy is also available.

“Printed at letter-size for easy photocopying, it’s packed full of worksheets and instructions to make 25 different formats of zines, with information to iterate, variate, and finish your tiny handmade books.” —Kori Michele Handwerker ‘19

Kori will be at SPX table W22a to debut TINY BOOK SCIENCE and will be running a workshop, “Paper Possibilities: Exploring One-Sheet Zine Formats,” on September 9 from 12:30 pm–2:00 pm.

Self-publishing since 2011, Kori has drawn hundreds of pages of comics and printed dozens of zines. Their work focuses on format, identity, mundanity, process, and queerness.

Cartoon Studies has a big showing at this year’s SPX—60 strong! Join us for workshops, panels, tabling, and the Ignatz Awards, where three CCS alumni and a fellow have been nominated. CCS Ignatz nominees include Robyn Smith ‘17 and CCS fellow (2011-12) Julie Delporte, both for Outstanding Artist; Daryl Seitchik ‘18 for Outstanding Comic; and Ana Two ‘24 for Outstanding Mini-Comic.

Congratulations to all the nominees!
