Memoir is a popular subject in comics and Melanie Gillman ’12 is here to help you work on your own graphic memoir. The Graphic Memoir Workshop takes 5 days to walk you through the basics. Melanie will take you through the entire process: brainstorming, scripting, drawing, and publishing. They will cover narrative building, developing your personal voice and artistic style, and effectively pitching and publishing your graphic memoir.
Melanie Gillman is the creator of As the Crow Flies. An ongoing web series, the first volume was recently released through Iron Circus. The comic is about 13-year old Charlie, a queer, black girl sent to an all-white Christian youth backpacking camp for a week of summer. It has been nominated for the Slate Cartoonist Studio Prize (2013), an Eisner Award (2014), and an Ignatz (2016), and it won a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators (2016), to name a few.
