In his masterfully rendered single-panel comics, Denys Wortman captured the true texture of life in New York City. During his lifetime Wortman’s work was held in great prestige, yet he is largely forgotten today. With the assistance of CCS co-founder James Sturm and CCS alum Brandon Elston, the Museum of the City of New York has curated an exhibition of Wortman’s original drawing. Denys Wortman Rediscovered: Drawings from the World-Telegram and Sun will be on display November 19 – March 20.

From the 1920s to 1950s — six days a week — in his feature “Metropolitan Movies,” cartoonist and artist Denys Wortman (1887–1958) portrayed, with compassion and humor, intimate and everyday moments in the lives of ordinary New Yorkers.

This exhibition provides a rare opportunity to rediscover the work of this artist, marking the first time most of these drawings have been seen in over half a century.
